Description
In the vast musical production between the Renaissance and Baroque periods, the repertoire considered suitable for Consorts of Renaissance transverse flutes is almost residual. Labyrinthus aims to break free from this enclosure by exploring works rarely or never tackled by transverse flutes, thereby contributing to the expansion of the playable repertoire for this family of instruments. Thus, a musical journey comes to life, intending to lead the listener through this vast sea, much like the mythical thread Ariadne used to help Theseus navigate the labyrinth of Knossos.
This exploration encompasses various aspects of the musical world of that era: vocal and instrumental pieces, sacred and secular compositions, dance, compositions based on ostinatos and tenors by Josquin and Ortiz, madrigals and villanelles from Willaert to Marenzio and Gesualdo, the instrumental language of Frescobaldi and Trabaci, and culminating in the advent of the “Seconda prattica.” Monteverdi, featured on this CD with his Lamento d’Arianna, ushered in the glorious season of melodrama.
