Benjamin Britten was undoubtedly one of the most important composers of vocal music of the 20th century. Always on the lookout for new sound possibilities and inclined to emphasise the contrasts that can be obtained from differences in timbre and rhythm, he declined almost all of his musical production with an idea of sound strongly tied to singing and to the expressive-communicative potential of the human voice.
