One hundred years ago, Mexican composer Manuel María Ponce (1882-1948) and Spanish guitarist Andres Segovia (1893-1987) started a musical collaboration, which produced one of the most celebrated additions to the Classical guitar repertoire in the 20th century. Widely recorded and performed by renowned artists, Ponce´s guitar works are recognized by its sophisticated sonorities, the use of counterpoint to generate tonal structure and musical eclecticism. He explored different musical idioms, avant-garde styles that ranged from Romanticism to Impressionism, from Nationalism to Neoclassicism – the cardinal points of musical Modernism. Ponce believed that the ideal path for a composer should be shaped as a spiral, in constant evolution: always exploring new musical ideas, and returning to old ones – but never in the same exact way.
