Description

With Isaac Albéniz: Spanish Landscapes, Dances and Songs, composer and guitarist Federico Ferrandina brings a fresh voice to some of Albéniz’s most evocative piano works, translating them into the instrument that seems to have been their true destination all along – the guitar.
Through these recordings, Ferrandina reveals the deep unity between the guitar’s timbre and Albéniz’s vision of Spain. What were once pianistic textures now bloom into natural resonance, their rhythmic pulse and melodic warmth fully alive in the guitar’s language.
Each piece — from the wistful Rumores de la Caleta and the stately Castilla to the introspective Mallorca — unfolds as part of a broader cultural portrait. Songs, dances, and landscapes emerge not just as musical forms, but as living expressions of the Spanish identity that Albéniz immortalized.
The album closes with an original four-movement work by Ferrandina, Suite Asturiana, conceived as a personal and living tribute to Albéniz. The suite opens with Llamada (Invocación), an improvised prelude that acts as a ritual call; it unfolds into Danza, driven by shifting rhythms between 6/8 and 3/4; continues with Copla, an instrumental song of intimate lyricism; and ends with Nocturno, a trembling, nostalgic tremolo that dissolves into silence.
Isaac Albéniz: Spanish Landscapes, Dances and Songs is both a tribute and a rediscovery – a journey through sound and spirit, where the guitar becomes the voice of a culture’s memory and imagination.
